Cold Weather and your Pet
COLD WEATHER TIPS
1. Outside, car anti-freeze is one of the most common pet poisonings. You must contact your veterinarian immediately if you suspect that your pet has consumed this product.
2. Ice melting products, as well as rat and mouse poisons are commonly used during the colder months. These can cause serious medical issues as well.
3. Cold temperatures can cause frostbite and hypothermia in pets as well as people. If your pet must stay outdoors, be sure that his shelter is elevated, enclosed on three sides, and supplied with generous amounts of beddings, such as straw or hay.
4. Use heated water bowls and replenish them frequently.
5. Many pets will not tolerate cold temperatures as well as the pet ages. Pets with arthritis may move more slowly and some pets may not be able to handle the ice and snow as easily as they get older.
6. See your veterinarian about a “winter check up” for your pet which will help guide you to keeping your dog or cat safe through the cold winter months.
