When nature strkes - tornadoes, floods, hurricanes
Natures
Wrath!
It is probably best that we don't control the weather and Mother Nature but sometimes we wish we could. With tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, sunami, thunderstorms, hail and everything else Mother Nature can throw at us, it is wise to have a safety plan. Your safety plan should include where to go, where to meet, how to contact family and emergency resources, medication, medical supplies and medical info, food and water, and support supplies. Below is a listing of items that you should have ready to travel with you or in your shelter area.
1. Have your pet micro-chipped – many of the pets that survived Katrina and other disasters are never returned to the owners because they had no identification. Micro-chipping provides permanent identification plus the database stores three different contact points to get your pet back to you.
2. Basic supplies
a. 7 day supply of dry kibble
b. Leash
c. Collar with I. D. tag
d. Bottled water
e. Pooper scooper bags (can be just grocery store plastic bags, zip lock bags, etc.)
f. Collapsible bowl
g. Dog or Cat carrier/crate
h. Blanket
i. Rolling bag to carry everything
3. Medicines
a. Dose of heartworm/flea prevention
b. Heart medications
c. Insulin
d. Any other ongoing medicine you pet is taking.
4. Medical Safety kit – the human safety kit can be used for your pets as well as your family members
5. Flashlight and batteries
6. Summary of your pet’s medical record
7. Photograph of your pet (and family members) should you become separated
Finally, if you become separated be sure to go to the shelters and look for yourself to be sure your pet has not been turned in to the shelter. During disasters shelters can become overcrowded and make it difficult for them to contact everyone, so looking for yourself can be the quickest way to get your loved pet back
